A compound as follows:

dropi = drop
steinn = stone
kerti = candle

In succession, a “drop stone candle.” More interpretively a stalagmite is named as a sort of dripping candle of stone/dripping stone candle. When you light a candle, the wax drips until it sort of piles at the bottom, and overlaps upon itself. Stalagmites seem to resemble this precisely.

Ah, such metaphors.
